Encircle

video installation

Anders Rönnlund says of Encircle, “It started with emptiness, a lack of contact. Contact with myself, with my parents, with my children.  It started with a wish to relate.”

Encircle features a large scale, architectural, drum-like construction. A series of back-projected video images are deployed to create continuous movement around the surface of the structure and a woman’s voice sings an old folk song. 

Rönnlund continues,  “The voice does not always carry - you can hear how it is filled with memories. My mother is singing her father’s favourite song from the early 1900’s. We are back to the time before the Russian revolution, when Finland was a part of Tsarist-Russia. The song is about an old man that remembers the love of a beautiful girl from the river Don.  He met her in his youth and together they forgot the world”.

The narrative is locked into a time and place, a closed world with private associations.  Everything is visible but, to develop an understanding, the observer must move around the circular form.

Anders Rönnlund parle d’Encircle

« J’ai commencé avec le vide, un manque de contact. Contact avec moi-même, avec mes parents, avec mes enfants. Cela a commencé par une envie de raconter. »

« Encircle » se présente comme un comme un énorme tambour sur la surface duquel défile une série d’images vidéo en mouvement continu pendant qu’une voix de femme chante une vielle chanson folklorique.

Rönnlund continue,  «  la voix ne doit pas nécessairement porter, on entend surtout à quel point elle est chargée de mémoire. Ma mère chante une chanson du début des années 1900, la chanson préférée de son père. Nous sommes ramenés au temps d"avant la révolution russe, quand la Finlande faisait encore partie de la Russie tsariste.
La chanson parle d’un vieux monsieur qui se souvient d’un amour de jeunesse, une belle jeune fille de la rivière Don. Il l’a rencontrée et ensemble ils ont oublié le monde. »

La narration est située dans un temps et un lieu précis, un monde clos avec des associations privées. Tout est visible mais pour développer une compréhension, le spectateur doit se déplacer autour de la forme circulaire.
